July-August General Stock Market Competition Rules and Picks

Here is how the competition works:

You simply enter the name of any publicly traded company on this thread— anything but penny stocks goes for this contest, but contestants can only enter one stock pick per competition.

The CSP staff will use the closing price of the day you selected the pick as your starting price and track it daily. We will post the results daily on this forum, and have an active leaderboard as well. The winner will be the person whose stock has the highest return at the end of the competition on August 15th. If there is a tie, the winner will be the one who chose the stock first.

Prize: The winner will have an interview featured on the site, receive special status in our forums, and receive our exclusive stock report.

The competition is fun and it also helps participants learn more about the stock market and investing. It literally takes two seconds to post the name of a company, and there are so many benefits. I hope to see you on the leaderboard!

My stock pick: Google (GOOG)

Date of stock pick: July 7

Why I like it: Google's stock has been beaten down way too much recently.  Google is gaining share in the mobile phone market, and with new innovation like Google Aps, I have confidence the they will continue to have good growth (at least for the next few years).

My Stock Pick: SanDisk Corp. (SNDK)

Date of Stock Pick: July 7

Why I like it: SanDisk's stock is down almost 20% over the last few weeks, putting at a PEG of .83, a great value for a stock in a strong industry that will benefit from the continued global growth of smartphones.

My Stock Pick: Apple Inc. (AAPL)

Date of Stock Pick: July 7

Why I like it: Even though Apple has a high share price, its PEG is only 1.03, and the company has zero debt.  It produces the dominant phone, laptop, desktop, and tablet.  Its sales have been strong, and more revenue could come in as print magazines and other publications develop iPad and iPhone apps.  Plus, Apple has formed an agreement to allow Skyhook Wireless to further improve the location-services apps on iPhones and iPads.  Stores are planning on sending coupons directly to customers as soon as they're outside of the store.

The company is an outstanding innovator.  I'm confident that they'll keep improving.

Is there an end date on joining the competition? The competition may become unfairly skewed if the starting dates of the picked stocks are spaced too far apart.

Perhaps if the deadline for picking a stock was July 15th, for example, and then the tracking of all recorded stocks would begin on the 15th of July and end on the 15th of August? Think that might be a tad more fair?

Intenex,

You are correct in that is how it works. That was supposed to have been made clear. We will make sure to fix this.

The deadline to pick your stock is July 15th, one month before the end date.

My stock pick: Netflix (NFLX)

Date of stock pick: July 8

Why I like it: Netflix has always been my favorite stock. I chose it because it's in the red today and likely to go up soon (!). That and I covet my movie subscription like no other. Guess we'll see what happens!

Thanks for the clarification Connor. That gives me a little time to get up to date with a few stocks and make a much more educated guess ;).

My Stock Pick: American Apparel (APP)
Date: July 9th
Why: Since Ron Burkle just bought a 6% stake in the company I have a feeling that they'll start doing better. Besides, it's my personal favorite company and has been introducing some new products lately that are very on-trend.

My stock pick: Dendreon (DNDN)

Date: July 10

Why I like it: Dendreon is one of the first cancer drugs of it's kind. It specifically attacks prostate cancer and can add 3 to 4 additional months onto a life if the patient does NOT want invasive surgery. The reason it is so appealing to me is that I find this could be a gateway to other cancer drugs that wil last longer or possibly cure the disease. I find it is only a matter of time. The Dendreon Corp. will not join with any other companies and the closet another company is to having the same results is at best a few years.

My Stock Pick: Activision Blizzard (ATVI)

Date of Pick: July 10

Why: Although Activision may have a few problems keeping its size with the music genre in a decline, Blizzard will more than make up for any loss from the Activision side with its incredibly stable World of Warcraft income, and now that they are releasing a new Starcraft game and a World of Warcraft expansion this year, they are certain to do very well for at least the next couple of years.

My stock pick: Panera Bread Co. (PNRA)

Date: July 10

Why I like it: Panera is just absolutely delicious! Not to mention it's been having a pretty good year, which is probably in no small part due to its new marketing technique –"pay what you want." While this technique has proven successful for only one restaurant, it plans on implementing it on a wider scale very soon. Not to mention, you just can't beat their poppy seed bagels!

My pick will be Boeing (BA).

Boeing just put in thier bid for the Air Force Tanker deal and it looks like that should get it with no problem.  Also, as we start our climb out of the recession and airlines strart to recover, orders for the new 787 should pick up and orders for existing aircraft should increase too.
